  The full title of the Passionist institute is: The Congregation of Discalced Clerks of the Most Holy Cross and Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Foundation. The founder was St. Paul of the Cross, called in the world Paul Francis Danei. The saint was born 3 Jan., , at Ovada, a small town in the then Republic of Genoa. His vocation led him to enter the Passionist Order taking the name Father Ignatius, and from there on spent his life working for the unity of all Christians. Much of his work centred on Ireland where he argued that if the Irish prayed for their English oppressor, God would listen to their prayers.

The founding priest needed the assistance of Father Paul’s missionary experience. During Father Ponziglione’s 21 months at St. Stephen’s he also served missions at Lander and Fort Washakie. After completing his Wyoming work Father Ponziglione was sent to St. Ignatius College, Chicago. On January 5, George Spencer received the Passionist habit from his old friend Father Dominic Barberi.
